9 Most Expensive Energy Cards In Pokémon TCG

Most Pokémon card Collectors dismiss Energy cards as “just another common”– the kind that piles up in dusty crates in the basement.

But a handful feature unique artwork, nostalgic ties, and tiny print runs that transform them into rare and expensive collectibles. The challenge? Spotting which Energy cards hold lasting value instead of fading into bulk piles.

Here are the 9 most expensive Energy cards in Pokémon TCG today, why they’re so rare, and why Collectors chase them so much.

Let’s level up your binder.

The last ever Fairy-type Energy printed before the type’s retirement makes this a unique sentimental piece for Collectors.

Rarity:

Secret Rare Gold

Raw Mint Value:

$85

PSA 10 Value:

$400

In 2019, Pokémon retired the Fairy type from the TCG, closing the chapter on a fan-favorite element of the game. Collectors quickly began looking for a piece of that legacy they could hold onto, knowing nothing new would ever be printed again.

The final Fairy Energy, released just before retirement, answered that need. The stunning pink-on-gold foil and “last of kind” status turned it into a chase collectible overnight.

With Gold Secret Rare pull rates already low, supply stayed thin while nostalgia propped demand. Years later, the card’s value has only proven its demand- raw mint copies fetch around $80–$90, while PSA 10s climb to $400, cementing it as a historic milestone in the hobby.

A Gold Secret Rare Dark-type Energy that is often overlooked in favour of its Fairy counterpart but still holds value.

Rarity:

Secret Rare Gold

Raw Mint Value:

$47

PSA 10 Value:

$82

This Secret Rare Darkness Energy came out during the Sun & Moon era and had a bold black-on-gold look that made Collectors stop and look twice.

Whilst it often gets overshadowed by the Fairy Energy from the same set, its beautiful design, coupled with Darkness being one of the most popular types in Pokémon cards, ensures it stays a favourite among collectors and players.

Compared to its peers, it’s one of the more “affordable” expensive Energy cards. Raw copies average $40, and PSA 10s under $100.

This one is for Collectors chasing complete gold Energy sets- or simply a dramatic Darkness centerpiece.

A modern gold reimagining of the classic Rainbow Energy, blending old-school nostalgia with modern rarity.

Rarity:

Secret Rare Gold

Raw Mint Value:

$45

PSA 10 Value:

$150

Rainbow Energy has been a fan favorite since its debut in Team Rocket back in 2000, being prized for its aesthetics and historical gameplay significance as the first-ever Special Energy card that provided every type of Energy.

With nostalgia baked into its design, Collectors loved seeing a beloved mechanic return with a modern-day gold-trimmed glow-up.

At the same time, prices stayed relatively affordable- raw copies hover around $45, and PSA 10s around $150.

Its relatively lower price reflects how Special Energies are often less chased than character cards and how Celestial Storm saw heavy print runs.

Still, Rainbow’s place in history and its appeal to gold binder builders keep it relevant, with prices trending steadily upward.

The “firework” reverse holo pattern was notoriously scratch-prone and hard to grade PSA 10, driving scarcity and price.

Rarity:

Reverse Holo

Raw Mint Value:

$1

PSA 10 Value:

$350+

The “fireworks” reverse holo pattern was notoriously scratch-prone and hard to grade PSA 10, driving scarcity and price.

When Legendary Collection launched in 2002, it featured two versions of Potion Energy- one was a normal uncommon, whilst the other was a reverse holo.

The reverse holo had the iconic “firework” holofoil pattern. It was gorgeous to look at but notoriously prone to scratches.

Most copies were heavily played or scratched straight out of the pack, leaving raw versions worth as little as a dollar today.

But in gem mint condition, the story flips entirely- PSA 10s have sold for $350+ and PSA 9s reach around $90.

Ultimately, its value lies in preservation, making it a perfect example of how grading can completely reshape a card’s value.

Beware:

Only the reverse holo version of Potion Energy is valuable. The non-holo version is worth much less.

One of the most valuable Energies in the world, with a rare design twist featuring a silhouette of fan-favourite Umbreon.

Rarity:

Holofoil Rare

Raw Mint Value:

$75

PSA 10 Value:

$450+

When Call of Legends was released in 2011, collectors were given something unusual- Basic Energies depicting Pokémon character silhouettes.

The Darkness Energy stood out right away because Umbreon shone through the holofoil. This wasn’t just any old Basic Energy anymore; it was a collectible that struck a chord with Eeveelution fans.

Umbreon’s long-lasting popularity and the set’s notoriously small print run have kept the demand high. Today, raw copies sell for about $75, while PSA 10s can sell for more than $450, showing how much people want this card.

Showcases Lugia, turning a Basic Energy into an old-school legendary crossover collectible.

Rarity:

Holofoil Rare.

Raw Mint Value:

$50

PSA 10 Value:

$435

Another highlight from Call of Legends was the Water Energy that quietly hid Lugia’s silhouette within its shimmering holofoil.

What was a basic utility card for water decks is now turned into a tribute to Johto’s legendary guardian, instantly making it desirable for old-school Pokémon fans.

Combined with the set’s low print run and the fact that it was one of the last special sets of its era, the card’s importance only grew.

Raw copies hover around $50, but PSA 10s have surpassed $400, with very few perfect specimens available. Alongside the Umbreon Darkness Energy, it has become one of the defining cards of the set.

An exclusive holofoil and the only Special Energy promo card to have ever been distributed at International Championship level.

Rarity:

Ultra-limited reverse holo

Raw Mint Value:

$150+

PSA 10 Value:

$450+

At the 2017 Oceania International Championships, players walked away with more than just names on a leaderboard- they received a stamped promo holo Double Colourless Energy that would later become one of the most heavily chased Energy cards.

Only participants got one, and extra-stamped versions were also reserved for Top 8 finishers, champions, and staff, with perhaps only 30 copies known.

These were never pack-pulled, giving them instant trophy status.By 2025, a POP1 PSA 10 (the first copy of the card to gain PSA 10 status) sold for $566, showing how fiercely Collectors chase them.

Found in the limited print run 30-card half-deck given to Creatures Inc. staff, making it one of the rarest Energy cards ever.

Rarity:

Ultra-limited exclusive print

Raw Mint Value:

$100 estimate

PSA 10 Value:

$500 to $700+

In 2021, Pokémon’s 25th anniversary was marked by many celebrations, but one of the most exclusive came quietly behind closed doors.

Creatures Inc. staff received a special Japanese print deck containing cards never printed for booster packs. Only 200 were estimated to have been distributed.

One of the cards in this exclusive deck was a Blend Energy with the number “25” stamped on the bottom right corner of the artwork.

Collectors see the cards in this deck as a grail to Pokémon’s own corporate history- a legacy that embodies symbolism, insider exclusivity, and unparalleled rarity.  It is difficult to find recorded sales of Blend Energy because it is so rare, but a PSA 9 recently sold for $319.99 on eBay. PSA 10s would be expected to exceed $500 quite easily.

Beware:

Don’t mistake the 25th Anniversary stamped version with the regular Japanese version of the same card, which is not worth much money.

The first-ever holo Energy is famous for its “firework” swirl holo pattern and scarce Gem Mint population.

Rarity:

Secret Rare Gold.

Raw Mint Value:

$25+

PSA 10 Value:

$1000+

Back in 2000, Rainbow Energy made Pokémon TCG history as the first holographic Energy card ever printed.

Debuting in the Team Rocket set, the vivid swirling firework holofoil pattern instantly became iconic.

The card also went on to see heavy competitive use because it provided every type of Energy in a single attachment (you’ll know how powerful this mechanic is if you play Pokémon TCG).

That popularity, however, left most copies battered with scratches that tank the price to around $25. There are simply very few pristine specimens in circulation these days (mint copies can still sell for $100+).

PSA 10s on the other hand can easily fetch $1000+, and a recent eBay sale even went for $1699.99.

Beware:

Don’t confuse the holo version of Rainbow Energy (Team Rocket #17) with the non-holo version from the same set (Team Rocket #80). Both are valuable, but the holo commands much higher prices.
